DMZ Audio didn't start as a business plan. It grew out of forum threads, meet-ups, demo tours and late-night listening sessions with people who care about sound as much as we do.
Like a lot of us, it started with a Sony Walkman. Years later, in 2014, I spent $479 on a pair of Sony XBA-4 earphones for interstate work flights. At the time it felt like absolute madness, since I'd never spent more than $100 on earphones. They lasted me five years.
Then in March 2019 I bought my first high-end IEM, the Sony IER-Z1R, and joined Head-Fi the same month. That was it. Over the next few years I owned, compared, sold and (more than once) bought back some of the best IEMs, DAPs and cables in the world, mostly with electronic music playing. Along the way I wrote thousands of posts and made friends all over the world.
Living in Australia meant most of that gear had to be bought blind. There were few places to demo high-end IEMs, and no CanJam down under. So the Melbourne crew started meeting up and passing gear around, and in 2023 I started organising Australian Head-Fi tours.
Brands kindly sent demo units, and we posted them from listener to listener across the country so people could hear them at home before spending their money.
Those tours, meet-ups and trips to CanJam in Singapore and London built real relationships with the people behind the gear. In 2025 that became DMZ Audio: a way to bring the boutique brands I believe in to Australian and international listeners.
